Thick hair can be a blessing , but it also has its drawbacks. It takes forever to dry thick hair. Air-drying isn't always an option. Fortunately, there's a great solution: blow-drying. But what's the best way to do it, how do you prevent damage, and what's the best blow-drying brush? Read all about it in this blog post.

Why does it take so long to dry thick hair?

This all has to do with your hair's porosity. Now you're wondering, what is porosity? This is the outer layer of your hair, made up of scales. Scales protect the inner layer of your hair and maintain its moisture balance. This way, your hair gets the right amount of moisture to stay strong and healthy.

Returning to thick hair, thick hair has low porosity. This means the cuticles are close together, making it difficult for moisture to enter. Furthermore, it's also difficult for moisture that has already entered to escape. This is why it often takes longer to dry thick hair.

How do you blow-dry thick hair?

We've created a short step-by-step guide to make blow-drying your thick hair easier. Here are the four most important steps for blow-drying thick hair:

Step 1: Start with towel-dried hair

If you want to shorten the drying time of thick hair, it's important to towel-dry your hair as much as possible before you start blow-drying. Therefore, don't use the same towel for drying your body and your hair. For thick hair, it's important to use at least one clean, dry towel. Leave the towel in while getting dressed or even applying makeup to give your hair extra drying time.
Tip : Use a microfiber towel. These towels can absorb a lot of water, are lightweight, and gentler on your hair.

Step 2: Section your hair and remove any tangles

Before you start blow-drying, it's important to make sure your hair is tangle-free. Thick hair often gets tangled after washing, which is very annoying when you style your hair with a hairdryer or brush. So make sure all tangles are removed before blow-drying.
For thick hair, it's helpful to section it before blow-drying. You can do this by securing the top section of your hair with clip-ons. The smaller sections you divide it into, the nicer and easier it will be to blow-dry your hair.

Step 3: Use heat protection

If you want to blow-dry thick hair easily, you need to set the dryer to a high temperature. It's very important to protect your hair from this. Use a heat protector and ensure that high temperatures aren't damaging to your hair. Apply the heat protector to each section of hair you created in step 2.

Step 4: Blow-drying

For thick hair, a temperature of 200-230 degrees Celsius on the hairdryer or blow-drying brush is recommended. See what works best for your hair, as this can vary depending on your hair type. If you have enough time, always use a lower temperature. Always start by blow-drying the bottom layer of your hair because you don't want your hair to come into contact with wet hair again. So, always work from the bottom up when blow-drying. Blow-dry your hair this way until it's completely dry. Then style with a light oil for a long-lasting, beautiful effect. Use Rhassoul Volume Oil or choose Indulging Fluid Oil to combat frizz.

Can I blow-dry thick hair with a hair brush?

A blow-dry brush, or hot air brush, is an electric appliance with a round shape that blows hot air while you brush your hair. A blow-dry brush is recommended for thick hair because it's much safer to use than a curling iron or straightener. A blow-dry brush is much less damaging because the electric appliance doesn't have hot plates or a cylinder that presses against your hair. The air that comes out of the blow-dry brush isn't as hot and is less likely to damage or dry out your hair. Other advantages of using a blow-dry brush include:

  • Smoothing your hair
  • Extra volume
  • Dries your hair while you style it
  • Frizz-free hair
  • Replaces brush and hairdryer
  • Easy to use
